Will E-Bikes Replace Cars?
A question I have been asking is are e-bikes eating into the sale of cars in the U.S.
Indicators this may be so include:
Light vehicle sales peaked in the U.S. about 2016, about the same time that e-bikes came on the market, and sales are way down from 2019
The average price of light vehicles are way up, estimated to be $47,000 this year. This is largely because the lower end of the market has seen much steeper declines in sales
E-bike sales have consistently grown at about the same rate as have plug-in light vehicles, an remained about 20% higher that electric cars
Counter indicators include:
Number of registered light vehicles are at an all time high in the U.S.
Average age of light vehicles are also at an all time high of 12 years, so is there a huge pent up demand for new light vehicles or are people holding on to old ones while mostly using alternative transportation options like e-bikes?
