Re: Anrew CoyneYou may think you have the Right Not To Vote - however there is a Responsibility that goes with Citizenship - and that is to cast a vote to show you are interested in your Country. (You can always choose to check off the "None of the above" option if you so choose.) If you wish to have Rights for everyone and not hold anyone Responsible - then you must also stop the whining and complaining when you are unhappy with what you did not in fact do anything to help choose! You will not get imprisoned for not voting - but you may lose some tax credits or benefits if you choose to not participate in the continuing health and economy of your Nation of Birth or Choice. Since when did Democracy mean everyone gets all these Rights and yet no one has any civic responsibilities, duties or obligations? You drive on the road there are Registration fees, petroleum taxes and Insurance obligations - and if you keep cheating or ignoring the Rules Of The Road - you get a fine, demerit points - and for serious repeat offender - loss of licence for a period of time. You live in a nice suburb, enjoy the Provinces roads, Schools, Health Care and profits from Resources - you pay the appropriate Taxes. If you are a persistent vandal, petty criminal, or other such died in the wool Libertarian - you do tend to get taken in hand and shown the error of of your ways when caught in the act. Freedoms are bounded, Rights are not Infinite, and Laws are not draconian. This is the Tit for Tat we take for granted - even if we bristle at some of the sillier legacy Rules and fight (through the proper channels) to get pre-historic Laws and Civil Codes brought up to date in line with evolving modern understandings and Cultural "Tastes." The Aussies do it and several other Nations. To me it sounds like a reasonable request - and one that should not cause anyone any hardships. GS |
