I have a few token shares here and there, so I don't follow Mavis much, but that never stopped me from giving an uninformed opinion :-)

The buying, and resulting short covering, seems due to both the AI explosion and the new Apple headset.
This afternoon, on CNBC, Josh Brown gave a beyond ecstatic vision the present and future of the new Apple headset especially its evolution ( "we are not going to be walking around with phones in our hands 10 years from now" ) going forward.

Anybody that followed the microvision visor saga long ago will recognize that optimism. However, we seem closer to the future than ever.

If anybody wants to compete with Apple, or if Apple wants any of the key Mavis patents, the 25-year-old dream may come true.

So, yeah, there could be a product announcement coming forward, or there could be a bunch of money speculated to be flowing into the underfunded Mavis Labs.

As always, I will kick myself for not buying low, and I will not sell high, except maybe to fund my purchase of a Mavis headset that took 30 years to come to market :-)
