Distant metastasis defined I was wrong thinking "distant" meant longer time. It means, in this case, melanoma (skin cancer) comes back as some other kind of cancer, or maybe on an organ other than skin. distant metastasis(DIS-tunt meh-TAS-tuh-sis) Refers to cancer that has spread from the original (primary) tumor to distant organs or distant lymph nodes.
