Karl, I would differ just a bit-- say SP appreciation was jet fueled by forces outside the company but it was still based on what the company achieved, which was stellar flu vaccine results which bested the market leading vaccine by Sanofi. That was a very big deal. (Yes, for which Stan stated he would appoint a dedicated team to bring to market concurrently, another in his long list of distinguished failures.)
So the flu results (and the fact that Novavax was a different platform; OWS chose 2 mRNAs, 2 Proteins, 2 Viral Vectors, my goodness, sounds like Noah's Ark...) was the basis for CEPI $388M Award, which at the time was its largest in history followed by the (then also largest?) $1.6B OWS award.
I don't know if prior work with BARDA helped; it appears there was a clash with Rick Bright, a former Novavax employee, (I think) over a communications attempt.
So lightening in a test tube, yes. But it was based on a very important accomplishment.
