I think a lot of the sharper rebs saw the writing on the wall and hunkered down before the yankee fusilade. Only the most committed went all the way up the hill and did die for the Lost Cause. The ones who hunkered down were more willing to fight on their own soil then they were on land in Pennslyvania so the South was able to fight on with those soldiers.
