Re: Elon Musk’s SpaceX Loses Starlink Rural Broadband Subsidies>While you can choose to see this primarily through a partisan lens.< >One other way of looking at it is that the initial award to Starlink was, shall we say, faith-based: that the service would be technically capable of delivering the required upload and download speeds if and when the projected number of rural users actually took up the service.< Maybe I'm too cynical, but I'm not naive anymore. IMO, if you are a "friend" of the people with power on the left now and they want you to have a deal, they will find a way to give it to you that passes the smell test and vice versa. If you've been following the Musk story as closely as I have, you'd know he has traditionally been a supporter of democrats and has made a lot of money via dealings with government. In recent months he's made a move to the right politically. That was prompted by left wing censorship in the tech world, cancel culture, economic incompetence, mandates, and other non mainstream priorities he disagrees with (he sees the change on the left I and many others see). That's what prompted his deal proposal for Twitter. Since then, he's been under relentless attack from media, is being investigated for insider trading and other dealings, and now his company is not getting this deal. You are entitled to think it's all on the up and up. 10-20 years ago that's what I would have thought. Now, I think he has become a political enemy of the left. So they are out to punish him. You'll see, soon government support for Tesla is going to shift to Ford and other electric car makers. He's suddenly going to have more competition in the rocket business. His legal troubles are going to increase and so on. He has foolishly (though admirably) taken on the totalitarians in power now and he's going to pay. Sorry about the politics, but it's all related. Also, again, none of this is a criticism of rank and file democrats. I am also not absolving politicians on the right of corruption. I'm saying imo these kinds of awards and deals have a LOT to do with politics and NOT MERIT. Musk is red hot right now and imo the people in power in DC, much of the media, and certain government institutions are very very bad people. |
